WITH A

Louise Maxwell

Managing Director

I’ve always cheered for the underdog and I don’t believe in smoke and mirrors. Magic? Real magic yes of course, but not pretend magic or vanity metrics, or marketing agencies who sell services simply to sustain themselves, to keep their clients paying and keep their business afloat. That’s something that I can’t abide.

And those underdogs? Entrepreneurs trying to get a break, or a new marketing manager trying to fix a big problem, I hate to see people taking advantage of them and I saw that A LOT in my agency days.

So I set up Max Marketing to be the opposite, to cheer for the little guy, or just the average guy who asks for help. To freely share secrets and give advice to people who WANT it and NEED it. I built a system so that other people like me could share their secrets and give advice and help, the best help, to make a difference in the only way I knew how – THROUGH MARKETING.

Building a process from scratch means you get to put in ALL the good parts. We avoided legacy systems and quick fixes, preferring to develop the approach the LONG way, through tried, tested, failed, redesigned, retested, succeeded processes.

Each time a new person joins the business I ask them to “make it better” to identify our inefficiencies, introduce new innovations and bring in their experience to build on what we have.

We were fully virtual from day one, when I started my business in 2013, to ensure the business wasn’t paying rent, bricks and electrics, but rather invested in tools and ideas and people. Then a pandemic hit and we were already fully set up to work with our clients without missing a step. The world caught up with us.

Our strength is our team collaboration. We meet weekly to discuss our ideas, train and learn. We peer review each other’s work and we network out challenges with our wider team. When you work with one of our marketers, you get an army of specialists behind them.

Of everything, the thing of which I am most proud is getting up every day for eight years straight feeling excited about going to work. I’ve never been in a job I felt that way about before. Ultimately, if you do what you love, that’s got to be the best way to live right? I want EVERYONE to feel that way, whatever business they are in.

My Max Story

Where has your Max journey taken you so far?

Max has enabled me to grow my digital skills by exposing me to a huge variety of clients and their unique circumstances. Covid in particular presented a unique opportunity for clients to explore new ways of doing things and I have enjoyed being a part of all of their journeys.

What have you enjoyed most?

I really enjoy having a large team of marketers with different backgrounds and strengths to bounce ideas off.

What has been your most interesting/challenging project so far?

I am currently assisting a client to launch a brand new digital product and it has been very interesting being across that process from pricing through to development. I’m really looking forward to the launch later this month.

What have been the most important benefits of working at Max?

An interesting and varied portfolio of clients. Exposure to new situations. The opportunity to play to my strengths and bring in other marketers when necessary to fill any gaps.

Anything else?

An interesting and varied portfolio of clients. Exposure to new situations. The opportunity to play to my strengths and bring in other marketers when necessary to fill any gaps.

Where has your Max journey taken you so far?

I have gone from:

  • Having others control how I spend my time to me controlling how I spend my time,
  • A narrow focus on one type of business to a wider focus on many types of business,
  • Mixing with a handful of marketers with narrow industry experience to mixing with many marketers with varied industry experience.
What have you enjoyed most?
  • Working on client’s websites.
  • Reviewing client’s marketing materials.
  • Number crunching and analysis.
  • Training sessions.
  • Being able to brainstorm marketing ideas with other marketers / draw on others’ ideas and experiences.
What has been your most interesting/challenging project so far?

Most interesting: a website review for a client who wanted to develop a direct-to-consumer sales channel. This wasn’t just from an SEO perspective. What made it really interesting was the messaging and sales conversion aspect of this project.
Most challenging: a dietary supplement business. Due to strict laws around advertising and promotion, it was hard for this client to tap into problem-aware consumers with their marketing messages. So, I had to think about how they could promote their product without falling foul of the law.

What have been the most important benefits of working at Max?
  • You can tap into the knowledge of marketers with other industry experience and marketing skills.
  • The variety of clients and industries you get to work for or in.
  • You can develop and pursue your own interests within marketing. Your ability to grow and develop particular skills isn’t limited by what an employer might require.

Anything else?

Where has your Max journey taken you so far?

I have become a real marketing specialist who is confident in developing a strategy for any type of business across New Zealand. The 4Ps of my Max Marketing journey:

Plan: In any area of the business, to succeed, you need a plan. Establishing a business model and knowing what you for and areas of focus create a strategy and a clear way forward. Every business I have worked with appreciated clarity and direction that I could give them based on a sound and pragmatic plan.
People: Remember, it's always about making the lives of others better, whether they are your customer or employees. What I have learnt through my Max journey is that people are the key to success. With a brilliant plan, but without people, you won't drive results. Businesses with people as a core value grow much faster and much bigger.
Persevere: "Just keep going" - this is what I tell myself when KPIs seems to be too far away from the real numbers. People who plan and persevere eventually get there. A lot of it at the core of your business,
Progress: Whatever you do in marketing, pause and think where it helps you make any progress. Avoid stagnation and if you feel that things are just not happening, seek external help, audit your operations and focus on improvement. Involve the right people, plan and persevere. You've got this!

What have you enjoyed most?

I have worked with over 20 different businesses so far, and it has been an incredible journey helping start-ups take off, small businesses establish a solid digital presence, and medium-large sized entities pivot and find the most brilliant marketing solutions to see the actual results.

What has been your most interesting/challenging project so far?

One of my clients in the Construction/Engineering industry started to see the benefit of being a marketing-focused business two weeks since we began implementing their marketing strategy. The service providers market in New Zealand is highly saturated, and even with the construction boom nationwide, it was challenging to cut through the noise and get the right message delivered to our audience. We have, however, succeed. Looking back at why my client does what it does helped craft a compelling proposition that was communicated through the right marketing channels. They had to hire three more staff and have been operating at capacity for the past three months. This is just one of the many examples where I, together with the business owner, accepted a real challenge and accelerated business growth.

What have been the most important benefits of working at Max?

Team collaboration. There is nothing better than having a team of professional marketers who are always there to help you. Max Marketers might come from different backgrounds, have experience working in several industries or have just completed work for a client and know what really works and what does not.

Anything else?

Reviewing each other's work has been a great benefit, as our clients know they get the whole team of marketers working with them. Also, as a Max Marketer, it has given me so much confidence in developing strategies for various types of business knowing that there is always be a different point of view and, together, it will be a solid plan which business owners can rely on.

Cadi Homan

Client Services Manager Since 2018

Where has your Max journey taken you so far?

When I first started at Max, I had a good understanding of Marketing about 5 different types. Now I know there are over 100 different types of Marketing. I have grown and pushed myself to complete extra courses, so I can assist my team of experts. I have grown in the digital world and enjoy training our Team with the knowledge and experienced I have gained.

What have you enjoyed most?

I have really enjoyed being apart of the customers journey, from hearing a client’s needs to pairing them with my best suited marketers. Assisting with Funding support where needed, seeing how some clients have almost lost everything including hope, to getting the best help and support they need and seeing the results, makes me happy to be apart of their journey

What has been your most interesting/challenging project so far?

Most Interesting would be how many customers I've had to train or guide on how to use Zoom or Microsoft Teams during Covid, so that we could have meetings with them.
Most challenging would be during Covid, working around the clock fitting in all the clients with what little time we had left, with the crazy volume of work coming in and clients in tears needing our help not only having to assist with their marketing needs but also to be there to hear and listen to give hope that it will be okay, Their business would survive and yes we could help and that there was light at the end of the tunnel and that we would be in this together to help get them through it.

What have been the most important benefits of working at Max?

The flexibility of working remote, Being able to grow and up-skill myself, Being able to help clients in need has been rewarding for me and sits close to my heart.

Anything else?

Being the go-to person for Training and to assist with Sales and support amongst my peers, Funding & Process support to our clients and Key person regarding Government funding & Program support.
